Superwhisper alternatives: one-time purchase and offline options
Short answer: If Superwhisper's $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime price is the problem, the cheapest offline alternatives are free (Handy, open source; Spokenly's local models; Apple Dictation) or a one-time payment under $50 (Sorimac $9.99, VoiceInk from $25, Spokenly Local+ $29). MacWhisper Pro is €64 once if you also transcribe files. For Windows, look at Handy or Spokenly. All prices were checked on official sites on October 16, 2026.
Superwhisper is a capable app, and its free tier already includes unlimited Whisper models. People still go looking for an alternative for a few common reasons: Pro costs $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, the lifetime plan is $249.99 up front, and some want a Windows or Linux setup that matches their Mac, or source code they can read.
So this list is sorted by what you pay and how you pay, not by features. For each app we note whether it works offline and which platforms it covers. Every price and claim below comes from the company's own site, checked on October 16, 2026. Where a site does not say something, we write "not listed."
A disclosure: we make Sorimac, one of the apps below. We have described it with its limits, the same way as the others. If you came here from Wispr Flow rather than Superwhisper, our Wispr Flow alternatives list covers the cloud side of the field, and our three-way comparison goes deeper on Superwhisper itself.
What does Superwhisper cost, exactly?

| Pro monthly | $8.49/mo | Your own AI API keys, cloud and local AI models, translation to English, audio and video file transcription |
| Pro yearly | $84.99/yr | Same as Pro monthly |
| Pro lifetime | $249.99 once | Same as Pro monthly |

Two details matter before you switch. A Pro license can be activated on as many of your devices as you like, across Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, so the lifetime plan is better value if you use several of them. And Superwhisper's own FAQ says offline models "only run really well on Apple Silicon macs," which is true of most apps on this list too.
Which Superwhisper alternatives are free?
Handy. Free and open source under the MIT license (source), for macOS, Windows and Linux. Press a shortcut, speak, release, and the text is pasted where your cursor is. It runs Whisper or Parakeet models on your computer, and its site says "your voice stays on your computer." There is no AI rewriting and no paid tier. It is the most direct answer to "superwhisper alternative open source" and "free."
Spokenly (Free plan). Local Whisper and Parakeet models with unlimited use, no account and, in the pricing page's words, "no word caps, no trial clock." You can also connect your own API keys for cloud models and pay the provider directly. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS.
Apple Dictation. Already on your Mac, free, with no length limit. It stops after 30 seconds of silence, and on Apple silicon you can check in Keyboard settings whether general dictation is processed on the device. It has fewer controls than any app here; our Mac dictation vs Wispr Flow post covers what it can and cannot do.
Which ones can you buy once?
| App | One-time price | Works offline | Platforms | Try before buying |

| Sorimac | $9.99, 1 Mac | Yes | Mac only (Apple Silicon, macOS 15+) | 3-day trial, 14-day refund |
| VoiceInk | $25 (1 Mac), $39 (2), $49 (3) | Yes | Mac (Apple Silicon, macOS 14.4+), iOS app | Free trial, 14-day refund |
| Spokenly Local+ | $29 | Yes, local models | macOS, Windows, Linux (iOS "coming") | Free plan, which Local+ builds on |
| MacWhisper Pro | €64 | Yes | Mac (macOS 14.0+), iPhone and iPad app | Free version |
| Superwhisper Pro lifetime | $249.99 | Yes, on Apple Silicon | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android | 3,000 Pro words, 30-day refund |
Sources, checked October 16, 2026: tryvoiceink.com, spokenly.app/pricing, macwhisper.com and MacWhisper on Gumroad, superwhisper.com, Sorimac. MacWhisper's own site lists €64; its Gumroad checkout showed €65 the same day and converts to your local currency.
VoiceInk is the closest one-time match for Superwhisper's dictation side. It runs speech recognition on the Mac, supports custom words and text replacements, and is open source under GPL-3.0 (source). An optional Cloud Enhancement sends transcribed text, not audio, for cleanup; leave it off if nothing should leave the Mac. It needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and the site recommends 8GB of RAM.
Spokenly Local+ is unusual: dictation is already free, and the $29 buys extras on top (settings sync across devices, extra recording styles, priority support). Cloud models are not included; those are in Pro at $99.99 a year. If the free plan works for you, you may never need it.
MacWhisper Pro makes sense if you also transcribe recordings. Its center is file work: batch transcription, speaker recognition, subtitles, meeting recording. System-wide dictation is in both Free and Pro, with Pro adding "high quality" dictation, grammar cleanup and AI prompts.
Superwhisper lifetime is still on this list on purpose. If you use Superwhisper on a Mac and a Windows PC or a phone, $249.99 once covers all of them and may be cheaper over time than switching.
Which alternatives work on Windows?
If the reason you are leaving is a Windows or Linux machine, the pay-once Mac apps drop out. Handy (free) and Spokenly (free, Local+ or Pro) run on macOS, Windows and Linux. Superwhisper itself has a Windows app. On the cloud side, Wispr Flow and Aqua Voice also cover Windows; both are subscriptions and both transcribe on their servers, which is covered in our Wispr Flow alternatives post.
Where does Sorimac fit?
Sorimac is our app, so weigh this section with that in mind. It is a menu bar dictation app that runs Whisper and Qwen3-ASR models on the Mac, so your audio is not sent to a server. It goes online only to download models, check for updates and activate the license. It has a custom word list for names and terms, and it costs $9.99 once.
On our test Mac, the median time from starting to speak to the first typed character was 1.33 seconds with the Qwen3 model, measured in late September 2026. That is one Mac, and yours will differ.
What it does not do, compared with Superwhisper:
- Mac only. No Windows, iPhone or Android app, while one Superwhisper license covers all of those.
- Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later. Intel Macs and older macOS versions are not supported.
- No file transcription and no meeting notes. It is live dictation only.
- No AI rewriting modes like Superwhisper's custom modes.
- One Mac per license. Use the 3-day trial on your real writing first, and you have 14 days for a full refund.
Which one should you pick?
You want to pay nothing. Try Apple Dictation first, then Handy or Spokenly's free plan. Also consider staying on Superwhisper's free tier, which keeps unlimited Whisper models.
You want open source. Handy (MIT) or VoiceInk (GPL-3.0).
You want to pay once and stay offline on one Mac. Sorimac ($9.99) or VoiceInk ($25). VoiceInk has an iOS app and multi-Mac licenses; Sorimac is cheaper and Mac only.
You also transcribe interviews or podcasts. MacWhisper Pro (€64).
You use Windows or Linux too. Handy or Spokenly, or keep Superwhisper and consider its lifetime plan.
You are on an Intel Mac. Local models will be slow or unsupported in most of these apps. Superwhisper recommends cloud models on Intel, and MacWhisper says it also works on Intel Macs. Sorimac and VoiceInk do not run there.
