Dragon for Mac alternatives after the 2018 shutdown

We make Sorimac, one of the options below, so read us as an interested party. Facts about other apps come from their official pages, checked .

Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac effective October 22, 2018, and Dragon Professional v16 is for Windows 11 and 10 (Nuance pages, checked October 21, 2026). On a Mac, Apple's free Voice Control comes closest to Dragon's full hands-free control, Talon suits people who script their own commands, and Sorimac ($9.99 once) covers dictation plus basic Mac commands. None of them reproduces Dragon's macro system one to one.

What each replacement gets right and wrong

Apple Voice Control

The nearest thing to Dragon's command-and-control, at no cost. It is an accessibility feature in System Settings and goes beyond dictation into clicking and navigating. Apple's guide page does not say whether it runs on the device.

Talon

Powerful, but you build it yourself. Commands are scripts, so it rewards time spent configuring. Its home page does not state an offline mode.

Sorimac

A dictation app first, with a short command list. $9.99 once, speech recognition on the Mac, Apple Silicon and macOS 15+. It has no macro recorder, no speaker training and no central IT management, so heavy Dragon macro users should look at Voice Control or Talon.

Apple Dictation

Fine for a sentence or two. Free and on-device on Apple silicon; the 30-second silence stop makes it awkward for long dictation.

Dragon v16 on Windows

Only if the macros are the job. Nuance's data sheet lists Windows 11 and 10; the product page shows no price.

How do you move your Dragon habits to a Mac?

Dragon users usually miss three things: a reliable way to switch the microphone, their custom vocabulary and their commands. Here is how those map in Sorimac, using only commands that ship in the app today.

  1. Microphone on and off: instead of a Dragon hotkey, pick push-to-talk (hold a key while you speak) or always-on listening with a wake word, "Computer" or "Hey computer".
  2. Switching between dictation and commands: say "start dictation" or "typing mode", and "stop dictation" or "done typing" to leave it.
  3. Custom vocabulary: add names and terms to the custom word list, or say "replace" followed by the wrong word, "with", and the right one.
  4. App control: "Computer, open Mail", "switch to Safari", "quit". Window jumps: "remember this window as" a name, then "go to" that name.
  5. System commands: "volume up", "mute", "brighter", "screenshot", "lock screen", "dark mode", "new folder".
  6. Multi-step macros: build them in Apple's Shortcuts app and trigger them with "run shortcut". For anything deeper, Voice Control or Talon scripting is the better home.

FAQ

Is Dragon still available for Mac?

No. Nuance's support page says Dragon Professional Individual for Mac was discontinued effective October 22, 2018, with no updates after that date (checked October 21, 2026).

What is the closest free Dragon alternative on a Mac?

Apple Voice Control, built into macOS. It lets you navigate apps, interact with the screen and dictate and edit text, and you can add custom commands.

Can I bring my Dragon macros to a Mac?

Not directly. The nearest options are custom commands in Voice Control, scripts in Talon, or Apple Shortcuts started by voice, which Sorimac can do with "run shortcut".

Does Sorimac learn my voice like Dragon?

No. Sorimac has no speaker training. It uses general on-device models (Qwen3-ASR by default) and a custom word list for names and terms.
