Free dictation app for Mac options compared: word caps, models and features each free tier holds back, from Apple and Handy to Wispr Flow. Checked Oct 16, 2026. The only Mac dictation tools that are free with no word cap are Apple Dictation (built in), Handy (open source) and Spokenly's free plan, and all three can run offline. Superwhisper Free and MacWhisper Free have no word cap either but hold back AI cleanup and some features. Wispr Flow Free stops at 2,000 words a week on desktop, and Aqua Voice Free at 1,000 words. These limits were checked on official pages on October 16, 2026.

Superwhisper alternatives sorted by what you pay: free, one-time under $50, and around €64. Offline use, open source and Windows support, checked Oct 16, 2026. If Superwhisper's $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 lifetime price is the problem, the cheapest offline alternatives are free (Handy, open source; Spokenly's local models; Apple Dictation) or a one-time payment under $50 (Sorimac $9.99, VoiceInk from $25, Spokenly Local+ $29). MacWhisper Pro is €64 once if you also transcribe files. For Windows, look at Handy or Spokenly. All prices were checked on official sites on October 16, 2026.

Mac dictation vs Wispr Flow: is built-in good enough?

Mac dictation vs Wispr Flow, checked on Apple's and Wispr's own pages Oct 15, 2026: shortcuts, on-device use, the 30-second silence stop, commands and $15/mo. For short messages and notes, Apple's built-in Mac dictation is often good enough. It is free, has no length limit, adds punctuation automatically in supported languages, and on Apple silicon can process general dictation on the device. Wispr Flow costs $15 a month ($12 billed yearly, free plan 2,000 words a week on desktop), always transcribes in the cloud, and adds a personal dictionary, snippets and apps for Windows, iOS and Android. Both were checked on official pages on October 15, 2026.

Why your Mac dictation app types words you never said (and what we found in 35 days of audio)

Our Mac dictation app typed commands nobody spoke. We traced 412 cases in 35 days of local recordings to clicks and to the training data, and tested a fix. In 35 days of our own recordings, Sorimac's V2.1 model produced 412 voice-assistant commands nobody spoke, and 27 were typed into an app; the Qwen3 model produced none. More than half sat on 0.13 seconds of sound or less, such as clicks, and the V2.1 training data had no real-world silence. A detection rule we are testing, not in a release yet, would stop 291 of the 412 before dictation opens.

Our dictation app lagged by 282 seconds. The cause was a custom vocabulary list

Our Mac dictation app lagged 282 seconds on September 27. Custom vocabulary hints made the model read its 30-word list back on silence. The cause and the fix. The lag came from a custom vocabulary hint. On silent or noisy audio, the Qwen3 speech model read our 30-word vocabulary list back, and real speech waited in a queue behind those echoes, up to 282 seconds. Version 2.0.50 adds the hint only when there is speech, detects echoes, and skips obsolete work; the slowest 5% of passes went from 271,781 ms to 346 ms the next day.
